Satellite makes updates to NPA website faster

The National Pig Association’s web site news service is provided from the Lincolnshire Wolds, where mammoths still roam and empty tins connected by string represent cutting edge telecom services.

So in order to get the speed and convenience of always-on broadband, we have installed a satellite service, which beams up to Early Bird, and then into a German hub that connects with the Internet.

The costs work out well, given that we will be able to discontinue our ASDL line, the last bill for which it was over £1000, due in the main to several-times-a-day web up loads.

The new satellite service cost £1300 to install and monthly charges thereafter will be £70 plus a £30 support charge. Depending on the reliability of the service it may prove possible to discontinue support charge in due course.

Grants of £700 are available towards the installation of satellite broadband. They are easy to apply for and approval is granted in weeks rather than months.

Although I am appalled that taxpayers’ hard-earned money should be so lavishly doled out commercial enterprises such as the world, my convictions have not proved strong enough to prevent me from applying for, and getting, the grant.

Originally satellite could offer broadband speed only on the downlink. For uploading, the user was restricted to modern ISDN. However this has changed and one satellite provider, Avonline, can now offer high-speeds both up and down.

On the evidence so far, Avon line doesn't treat its customers with the contempt that normally prevails in the telecoms world-in other words we have been able to (a) phone without being put in a queue, and (b) to discuss our needs with a real, sensible, technical people.

Getting the pick world computer network to talk to the satellite required only a few adjustments the Mac OS X. and windows NT4.

One computer with windows XP connected straight away having apparently made all the necessary adjustments itself, but another with windows XP went into a non-communicative sulk and has so far resisted all our blandishments to get it to speak with the rest of the world.

We are ignoring it, in the hope that it will come to see the error of its ways.
