Avonline Pledges Support for UK Culture Secretary’s Superfast Broadband in Rural Areas commitment.

In his first major speech on the subject, the newly appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt, recently committed that delivering high speed broadband connections to rural areas will be a priority of the Coalition government. In his recent maiden speech as the newly appointed UK Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt made it clear that David Cameron's coalition government is committed to bringing high speed broadband to all parts of the UK and to ensure that all rural and urban areas will be treated equally.
"Government must ensure we do not open up a new digital divide between the urban areas and rural communities where superfast broadband may never be viable," Mr Hunt said.
He went on to say that it was a "scandal" that three million households could not get access to decent broadband and while he supported the previous government's target of a minimum 2Mbps connection across the UK by
2012, he called it "pitifully unambitious" compared to other countries.
