SMTP email problems

Problems can occur when users run antivirus and/or firewall software that sends all email via an internal proxy server. Timing issues occur, particularly when combined with a satellite link. One solution is to turn off the "Scan outgoing email" boxes in Norton AntiVirus (for example). If you scan incoming email and regularly scan for viruses generally, then this does not leave you exposed.
